8 Opening systems
While there are many opening systems, here are eight notable ones:
Open Game:
- Begins with 1.e4 e5, leading to open positions with free piece development. Examples include the Ruy Lopez and Italian Game.
Closed Game:
- Starts with 1.d4 d5, resulting in a more closed and strategic game. Examples include the Queen's Gambit and King's Indian Defense.
Semi-Open Game:
- Involves an asymmetrical pawn structure after 1.e4, where Black responds with a non-symmetrical move. The Sicilian Defense is a classic example.
Indian Game:
- Features pawn structures commonly associated with Indian Defense systems, such as the King's Indian Defense (1.d4 Nf6) or the Nimzo-Indian Defense (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6).
Hypermodern Opening:
- Involves allowing the opponent to occupy the center with pawns, aiming to control it indirectly with pieces. Examples include the Reti Opening (1.Nf3) and the English Opening (1.c4).
Flank Opening:
- Begins with a move other than 1.e4 or 1.d4. Flank openings include the English Opening (1.c4) and the Bird's Opening (1.f4).
Irregular Opening:
- Encompasses various uncommon or unorthodox openings that do not fit into standard categories. Examples include the Grob's Attack (1.g4) and the Hippopotamus Defense.
Double King's Pawn Opening:
- Features both players advancing their central pawns two squares (1.e4 e5). The Double King's Pawn Opening includes various lines, such as the Scotch Game and the Petrov Defense.
