Core rules for end game in chess.

Here are the core endgame rules in chess — the principles strong players automatically follow. If you learn and apply these, your endgame strength will jump immediately.

1. Activate the King (Golden Rule)

  • The king becomes a strong piece

  • Centralize it quickly

  • Use opposition to block the enemy king

A passive king = lost endgame

2. Passed Pawns Decide Games

  • Create passed pawns

  • Support them with the king

  • Outside passed pawns are especially powerful

Rule: Push pawns only when they are supported

3. Rooks Belong Behind Passed Pawns

  • Attack from behind

  • Support your own passed pawns from behind

  • Cut off the enemy king

This single rule wins many rook endgames.

4. Improve the Worst-Placed Piece

  • Endgames are slow

  • Use time to improve piece placement

  • Restrict opponent’s pieces

If unsure what to do → activate king or rook

5. Do Not Rush Pawn Moves

  • Pawn moves are irreversible

  • Every pawn push creates weaknesses

  • Fix enemy pawns before attacking

Strong endgame players wait until the moment is right

6. Trade Pieces, Not Pawns (When Ahead)

  • Exchange pieces to reduce counterplay

  • Keep pawns to create passers

  • Avoid trading into drawn pawn endings

7. Create Zugzwang

  • Force opponent into bad moves

  • Use triangulation

  • Take opposition

Zugzwang wins “equal” positions.

8. Use the Principle of Two Weaknesses

  • One weakness can be defended

  • Two weaknesses cannot

Create a second target on the opposite wing.

9. Activity Over Material

  • Active pieces beat extra pawns

  • Passive defense usually loses

  • Centralized rook > extra pawn

10. Know Basic Theoretical Endgames

You must know these by memory:

  • King + pawn vs king

  • Opposition & key squares

  • Lucena (winning rook endgame)

  • Philidor (drawing rook endgame)

  • Basic minor-piece mates

No theory = lost points.

11. Fix Pawns on Weak Squares

  • Attack pawns from behind

  • Lock them on one color

  • Place bishops on opposite colors to the pawns

12. Think in Plans, Not Moves

Ask yourself:

  1. Where should my king go?

  2. Which pawn is weak?

  3. Can I create a passer?

  4. Which piece is passive?

  5. Can I force zugzwang?

Quick Endgame Rule Summary

✔ King active
