How to get FIDE Trainer Title ?

The FIDE Trainer title is an official coaching title, not a playing title like FM/IM/GM. It’s awarded by FIDE to people who complete certified training and meet experience requirements.

Here’s the clear, correct path 👇

FIDE Trainer Titles (Levels)

FIDE has 4 trainer titles:

  1. FT – FIDE Trainer (entry level)

  2. FI – FIDE Instructor

  3. NI – National Instructor

  4. SI – Senior Instructor (highest)

Most people start with FT.

How to Get FIDE Trainer (FT) Title

✅ 1. Attend a FIDE-approved Trainer Seminar

  • Organized by:

    • FIDE

    • National Chess Federation

  • Duration: ~5–7 days

  • Topics include:

    • Teaching methods

    • Psychology

    • Training planning

    • Tactics, strategy, endgames

    • Anti-cheating & ethics

👉 You must attend fully.

  • Chess knowledge test

✅ 3. Meet Minimum Requirements

For FT (FIDE Trainer):

  • No high rating required

  • Teaching experience preferred (not always mandatory)

  • Must be recommended by seminar lecturers

Good news for you:
Your 1400 FIDE rating is NOT a problem for FT.

✅ 4. Apply Through Your National Federation

After passing:

  • Your federation submits your application to FIDE

  • Pay FIDE title fee (varies by country)

Higher Trainer Titles (For Future)

TitleTypical Requirement
FIFT + experience
NIFT + ~2000 rating or strong coaching record
SIIM/GM level + years of coaching

Important Truth

Trainer titles are about teaching ability, not playing strength alone.

Many strong players fail as trainers, and many average players succeed because they teach well.
