Who can conduct FIDE-rated chess tournaments ?
FIDE-rated chess tournaments can only be conducted (organized and submitted for rating) by organizers who meet FIDE requirements. In practice, this means the following people/bodies are involved:
1. National Chess Federation
-
A tournament must be organized under a national federation that is affiliated with FIDE.
-
The organizer (club, school, academy, company, individual) must get approval/endorsement from their national federation.
-
The federation is responsible for forwarding the tournament for FIDE rating.
2. Tournament Organizer

Can be:
-
Chess clubs
-
Chess academies
-
Schools/colleges
-
Chess associations
-
Registered individuals or companies
-
-
The organizer handles logistics (venue, players, schedule, prizes, etc.).
-
They cannot rate the event themselves; they work through the federation.
3. FIDE-Licensed Arbiter (Mandatory)
-
Every FIDE-rated tournament must be supervised by a licensed arbiter, such as:
-
FA – FIDE Arbiter
-
IA – International Arbiter
-
-
The arbiter:
-
Ensures FIDE Laws of Chess are followed
-
Submits the tournament report and results for FIDE rating
-
4. Who Cannot Conduct FIDE Tournaments Alone
-
Players without federation approval
-
